Moraira is the seafront district of Teulada. It has four beaches, two of which are easily accessible from the town centre, L’Ampolla beach by the castle and El Portet over the hill from the port. The other two beaches, Platgetes and L’Andrago are on the Calpe road out of town.
L’Ampolla is more commercial as it is near the town centre and the port. It has many gift shops and restaurants but it is also blessed with great beauty.
Moraira’s Moors and Christians fiesta is in June and is quite a spectacle with the Moors landing on L’Ampolla beach and fighting with the Christians to take possession of the castle.
The castle itself was built in the 18th Century to protect Moraira from the Berber pirates, it was completely restored in the 1980’s. It’s unusual “pezuna de buey (ox hoof) shape is designed with small slits in the walls for lookout posts and gun ports at various points where cannons were mounted. It has only one point of entry above which the Bourbons royal coat of arms is mounted. Inside it is divided into two floors and three wings.
